Busy doesn’t always mean productive
Pickers are walking. Forklifts are moving. Packing benches are full.
Yet orders are still waiting.
The cause might be fast-moving stock stored too far away, empty pick faces or repeated handling. Adding robots could move goods faster - straight into the next queue.
Before automating a movement, understand why it happens.
Follow the order. Then follow the money.
Trace a few orders from release to dispatch, including during your busiest period.
Where do they wait? What gets handled twice? When do people stop to fix a problem?
Then connect the proposed improvement to a business outcome.
If automation releases 100 labour hours a week, would that reduce overtime, replace agency shifts or help the existing team handle growth?
Hours saved aren’t automatically dollars saved.
The business case should also include integration, site preparation, training and ongoing support.
Design for your warehouse
Your operation has uneven demand, mixed loads, shared aisles and exceptions that a demonstration may never encounter.
Before investing, answer five questions:
Where does work queue during peak periods?
Which repetitive movements are worth automating?
How will the improvement create measurable value?
Can our site and systems support it?
How will we keep shipping when something stops?
Sometimes, the best first step is better slotting, replenishment or workflow design.
Sometimes, a clear transport bottleneck makes automation the right investment.
The evidence should decide.
